A father who eventually became frustrated with the way things were going on a family vacation he paid for was backed by fellow Reddit users on the popular “Am I the A**hole” forum for leaving and booking a hotel room for himself.
“AITA for leaving my family in ‘squalor’ and going to a ‘resort,'” u/Murky_Ad_193 asked in his post, which amassed more than 11,000 votes since it was published on Wednesday.
He said he decided to pay for a vacation that included his immediate family and several in-laws. When things went downhill, u/Murky_Ad_193, who heard nothing but complaints, decided to book a room at a hotel.
Difficult Family Members
When dealing with difficult family members, a piece published by Psychology Today said it is not worth trying to “fix” them.
“Sometimes it works, but often your efforts will not be rewarded,” the outlet said. “In fact, trying to fix someone or make their life better may become a huge headache, since the more you do for them, the more they want from you.”
It is also important for someone to enforce boundaries.
“Never allow any personal interaction or relationship to infringe upon or challenge your own well-being,” the article said.
In his post, u/Murky_Ad_193 said he wanted to pay for a vacation for his immediate family and extended family, which included his father-in-law, mother-in-law, his wife’s brother and his wife and their children—10 people in total.
Although he rented a truck and a large house that came with a pool, the problems arose when the vacation began. u/Murky_Ad_193 said he and his wife chose the “nicest” room in the house, while his father-in-law and mother-in-law chose to stay in the pool house. That left five bedrooms for the six other people.
What should have been a simple task to choose rooms turned into u/Murky_Ad_193’s family asking why he and his wife chose the “best room,” why one room had a larger television and why they couldn’t order every meal.
“I just went to my room and went to sleep,” u/Murky_Ad_193 said. “First day. More BS. Why did we have to wait in lines? Why don’t we get the tour guide that lets us skip the lines?”
He said his wife then said they shouldn’t have to cook at the house and it “wasn’t fair” that she and her sister-in-law were left to clean.
“My kids always help,” u/Murky_Ad_193 said. “I do too. BILL sits on his a** though.”
Eventually, he grew tired of hearing the complaints. While the family was eating dinner one night, u/Murky_Ad_193 booked a suite at a hotel.
“I texted my wife and told her I would catch up with everyone in the morning at the park,” he said. “She is mad that I left her to deal with those ungrateful greedy people.”
u/Murky_Ad_193 later updated Redditors and said his wife joined him at the hotel, but they planned to return to the house.
“My brother-in-law has been told if he even looks at our room he and his wife are going to a motel,” he said. “In-laws were told to Uber wherever they wanted. We are still taking everyone out for one dinner but all other meals not made in the house are pay your own way. And brother-in-law is responsible for cleaning up after meals. “
Many Reddit users took to the comments section and expressed their support for how u/Murky_Ad_193 chose to handle the difficult vacation.
“This is actually hilarious,” a top comment read. “You took a vacation from your entitled relatives’ vacation. Well, maybe you should have warned your wife and brought her along and left the other relatives to figure things out for themselves.”
“I cannot imagine the level of entitlement it takes to have a paid family vacation and complain about not getting the best room,” another Reddit user wrote.
One Reddit user said that should be the last time u/Murky_Ad_193 should pay for a vacation for everyone.
