CHARLOTTE, NC – After a perfect 4-0 start to the year winning their own Charlotte Invitational, the 49ers volleyball program hits the road for the first time this season traveling to Athens, Georgia for the Bulldog Classic beginning Friday night.
Charlotte begins with host Georgia on Friday night at 6:30 pm on SEC Network+. A 12:30 contest against Texas Tech and 5:00 pm matchup with the College of Charleston follow on Friday.
4-0 START TO 2022
Charlotte opened up the 2022 season winning their own Charlotte Invitational with Friday victories over Morgan State (3-0) and Wofford (3-1) before topping Campbell (3-1) and Syracuse (3-0) on Saturday. Emani’ Foster led the way in the opener vs. the Lady Bears with 15 kills and a .583 hitting percentage. Jessica Ricks went off in the nightcap vs. the SoCon preseason favorites Wofford throwing down a career-high 19 kills hitting .389 while Foster followed right behind with 18 kills and match-high 19 digs. On Saturday, Foster continued her tear with 19 kills hitting .356 with Ricks right behind adding 13 at .458 in the four-set win over Campbell. In the sweep over Syracuse, Foster threw down 20 final kills while Alex Washington added 12. In a stellar weekend for the defense, the Niners held the Orange to a .093 hitting percentage ending the four-match weekend allowing just a .125 percentage to their opponents.
FOSTER EARNS FIRST C-USA WEEKLY HONOR
It didn’t take long for Foster to pick up her first C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award after leading the Niners to their 4-0 start in 2022. For the weekend, Foster threw down 72 kills averaging 5.14/set hitting an even .300 on the weekend. The junior added 44 digs at 3.14/set and seven total blocks (four solo) registering 81.5 points. After one weekend, Foster leads the nation with those 81.5 points and fifth nationwide with those 5.14 kills/set.
WEATHERINGTON APPROACHES PAIR OF MILESTONES
After securing the four victories during opening weekend, Head Coach Karen Weatherington is needs just two more wins to hit 200 in her coaching career and just five more to hit the century mark at Charlotte.
RICKS OPENS SEASON WITH CAREER-HIGHS
Ricks entered her third season in 2022 with just three career kills before exploding onto the scene in the Charlotte Invitational. After three kills in a sweep of Morgan State, Ricks added 19 in a four-set win over Wofford, 13 more in the same against Campbell and five more against the Orange. Ricks put down 40 kills on the weekend and hit .333 to earn all-tournament team honors.
NATIONAL LEADER AFTER WEEK ONE
Foster’s incredible weekend has her leading the nation in total kills (72), total attacks (180) and points (81.5) after four matches of play. She’s also fifth nationwide in kills per set (5.14) and sixth in points per set (5.82). As a team, Charlotte is third in the country in assists (179), fourth in kills (187) and seventh in team blocks (36). All individual and team categories lead Conference USA.
