The Loews Boston Hotel has closed

The Loews Boston Hotel has closed in the Back Bay. But don’t worry, a new hotel has already opened in its place. Hotel AKA Back Bay is now open.

AKA has opened a 225-room property in place of the Loews Boston. The entire property will undergo a design refresh, while remaining open for stays.

The Hotel AKA Back Bay will offer a sophisticated functional design, intended for the “leisure” traveler, ie someone who is visiting Boston for a business meeting but has extended the trip for a few days to enjoy the city.

“As we continue our ambitious yet thoughtful growth strategy, we remain dedicated in our commitment to developing the AKA brand in the country’s most culturally significant destinations,” says Larry Korman, CEO of AKA. “Boston has long been a city of interest and we are delighted to introduce the bespoke AKA experience to Boston’s discerning visitors. Rich with history, bustling with business and educational institutions, as well as architecture and design reminiscent of an English city, Boston is a gateway into New England for the brand.”

The AKA Back Bay is located at 154 Berkeley Street, putting the hotel within walking distance of Boston Common, the Boston Public Library, Newbury Street and the Pru. If your family will be visiting Boston to see some colleges this fall, the hotel is close to Berklee College of Music, Boston College, Boston University, Emerson, Harvard, MIT, Northeastern University, and Tufts Medical School. So, this is a great option for new students, prospective students and their families as well. The hotel is also within walking distance of many of Boston’s best restaurants, museums and more things to do!

“This was an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-maintained, upper upscale hotel in the capital of New England, where several prestigious academic institutions, iconic cultural destinations, and the nation’s largest life science/biotech cluster are generating strong demand,” says Russ Urban, CEO of EAHG. “While Boston’s hotel recovery has trailed some markets, it is poised for a strong rebound once business and group travel returns in earnest.”

The current building housing AKA has a unique history. It was formerly the headquarters of The Boston Police Department from 1926-1990, giving it a certain degree of gravitas, which will be enhanced in the renovation. The signature restaurant on site will be sticking around but will be getting some new improvements as well. Precinct Kitchen+Bar will be home to a whiskey cellar and wine tasting room for guests and events.

Stay tuned for more information on AKA Back Bay as the property goes through its refresh!
