COAL TOWNSHIP – Flora “Flo” Rita (Avellino) Dorko, 80, of Coal Township, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, with her loving family by her side.
Flora was born at Shamokin State General Hospital, June 5, 1942, a daughter of Frederick and Margaret M. (Krall) Avellino.
Flora was a 1960 graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School.
She was a member of Our Lady of Hope Church, in Coal Township.
Throughout her lifetime, Flora worked at the Arrow Shirt Factory and The News-Item before retiring from Sundance Vacations Travel Agency at the age of 75.
In 1996, while working as a delivery carrier for The News-Item, and always thinking of others, she once saved a woman’s life by recognizing that the woman had not been taking in her newspapers. Instead of ignoring the signs, she reported her concerns di lei to the proper authorities who found the woman was in distress and in need of help. She received recognition from the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for her heroic efforts in helping to save an elderly woman’s life.
Flora was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying baseball, football and basketball. She was a music lover and enjoyed live music, enjoying many concerts with her children. She loved watching trivia shows like “Jeopardy!” and she enjoyed going to the casino.
Anyone who knew Flora knew she thrived on the exchange of conversation with good friends and new friends. Always full of life, Flora enjoyed sharing stories of her family about her and from her youth with her children and grandchildren. Flora also enjoyed spending time with her faithful canine companion, Ruby, who stayed by her side di lei day and night.
Flora was a person of faith, lived her life caring for others and will be dearly missed.
Flora is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 55 years, Joseph Gerald Dorko, whom she married, July 15, 1967, at St. Joseph’s Church; three children, Joseph T. Dorko and his wife di lui, Dawn, of Shamokin, Diane (Dorko) Bender, of Mount Carmel, and Mary Dorko, of Coal Township; two grandchildren, Cheyanne and Cierra Bender; to brother, Francis Avellino, of Las Vegas; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Flora was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Avellino, of Ocala, Florida.

As an expression of sympathy, Flo’s family requests memorial contributions be made to a local animal shelter.
