Prior Lake Man Charged With Murder During Group’s Tubing Trip

ST. CROIX COUNTY, WI — A 52-year-old Prior Lake, Minnesota man is accused of fatally stabbing a 17-year-old boy from Stillwater and injuring four others while they were tubing on a Wisconsin river near the state’s border with Minnesota on Saturday .

Nicolae Miu was charged Monday with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and four counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the attack on Apple River in Somerset Township.

The Star Tribune identified the teen as Isaac Schuman, who was going into his senior year at Stillwater High School.

Among the survivors is Ryhley Mattison, 24, of Burnsville.

“Some friends and I were tubing when we came a crossed a group who were asking for our help,” Mattison wrote on her GoFundMe page. “My friends and I went over to see what was going on and there was an older man there being inappropriate and was asked to leave but wouldn’t. The older man ended up having a knife and stabbed a few friends of mine and included myself .”

Mattison said she has “no way of paying for these medical bills and I’m struggling making ends meet right now.”

The criminal complaint details a gruesome killing that police said was captured on video.

St. Croix County authorities were called to the river just before 4 pm Saturday. At the scene, five people had stab wounds in their mid-sections, authorities said.

Two people were flown to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, while two others were taken to Regions by ambulance. The Stillwater boy was taken by ambulance to Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect left the scene, presumably still armed with a knife, according to investigators. He was spotted by witnesses near an exit point for tubers on the Apple River and was taken into custody, authorities said.

The four others who survived are now in stable condition, authorities said. They were identified as:

  • 20-year-old man from Luck, Wisconsin
  • 22-year-old man from Luck, Wisconsin
  • 24-year-old woman from Burnsville, Minnesota
  • 22-year-old man from Elk River, Minnesota
