New Mom Bashed for ‘Ruining’ Sister’s Vacation

The internet has slammed a new mom for “ruining” her sister’s vacation in a new post going viral on social media.

Published to Reddit’s popular r/AmITheA**hole forum, a woman under the anonymous username u/moonturtle766 shared her story to get the opinions of the “AITA” community. The popular post has over 10,000 upvotes and 1,000 comments.

The Redditor began her post by explaining that her sister has a 2-year-old son and recently gave birth. She writes that her sister has trouble taking care of her kids and asks others for help, and the original poster (OP)’s mother is the one who usually helps.

The OP said that she booked an expensive vacation to the beach over a year ago and invited her mom along with her. A month before the vacation, her mother declared that the OP’s sister was coming along with the children since her boyfriend was on a vacation of his own. Concerned for her free time, the OP spoke to her mom saying that she was nervous that she was going to spend her vacation babysitting her sister’s children.

The OP described herself as an introvert and how she can get overwhelmed if she is around people for too long. She is very sensitive to loud noises and needs breaks from social activities. She typically goes to sleep when she feels overwhelmed.

During her vacation, her fears of constant babysitting became a reality. She wrote that she was responsible for keeping her nephew occupied while her sister and mom were either on the phone or with the baby. When she is in need of being alone or taking a break, her nephew follows her asking her to play with him. The only way they leave the OP alone is when she’s asleep.

“My sisters told me today I’m ruining her vacation because I make a long face all the time. I don’t know if that’s an English expression but in Dutch it means I’m not happy all the time. I was so annoyed I told her what do you mean ruining your vacation and I paid for it. This is my vacation. She started yelling and said that just because I paid for everything doesn’t mean I can sit here and ruin it for her,” she wrote.

“I said you invited yourself and didn’t ask you to be here. And said that they promised I would not have to babysit. She began yelling louder and said I haven’t touched the baby while we where here (that’s a lie and have given him his bottle a few times and held him while he slept and cried plenty of times.) I told her who has been keeping the 2 year old busy. She got more angry and said isn’t that normal for you to want to play with the 2 year old as his aunt,” she continued.

The OP’s mother sided with her sister, saying that she shouldn’t complain about being with her own nephew. The two yelled at the Reddit user, saying that there is “something wrong” with her and that she needed to think about what she said.

“I’ve been crying non stop and have no clue what to do anymore. They don’t talk to me. And I’m stuck here with them until Friday,” the OP concluded.

Introvert vs. An extrovert

When someone considers themselves an introvert, it typically means they enjoy having alone time and is more of a quiet, reserved person. An extroverted person is more of an unreserved person and loves social interactions with others.

According to verywellmind.com, introverts make up 25 to 40 percent of the world’s population. When introverts attend social gatherings, they need some time alone to “recharge.”

Do you think you could be an introvert? Per thriveglobal.com, introverts love their alone time, too much socializing can leave introverts feeling exhausted, introverts tend to have a small group of friends rather than a large group, introverts can feel disconnected from themselves while in a crowd and introverts prefer to write rather than speak.

Redditors Reactions

“[Not the a**hole] Your sister sucks,” u/pinkhazy received the top comment of over 15,000 upvotes.

U/ReluctantVegetarian replied to the top comment, “Also the mother sucks. I am sure she was worried about leaving her older daughter at home with two children when both she and the father would be away – but it’s not fair to ruin her younger daughter’s vacation – which she paid for – by inviting the sister along. [Not the a**hole].”

“[Not the a**hole] – Your sister took advantage and your mum didn’t give [a f**k] about you or your feelings. Go off on your own, enjoy the rest of your holiday! When you get back set boundaries and leave them to it! Your sisters kids are not your responsibility, next time go away on your own or go with a friend or a solo travelers group. Neither your mum nor your sister have thought about you or your feelings, it’s all about your sister, her needs and her kids,” u/Ill_Run_9956 explained.

“[Not the a**hole]-They’re using you to give themselves a vacation,” u/GothPenguin admitted.
