Here are the top stories today in Tampa:

1. Tampa City Council voted Thursday in a 6 – 1 vote to declare a housing state of emergency. The council intends to let voters decide if rent control should be enacted in the City of Tampa at the ballot box. Tampa residents have been suffering from an affordable housing crisis and demanded action from leaders. (Tampa Patch, Creative Loafing Tampa)

2. Tampa General Hospital has ranked No. 1 in the country on Forbes’ America’s Best Employers for Women list. Criteria included working conditions, workplace, diversity, likelihood to recommend, and family support. (Tampa Patch)

3. Boulon Brasserieto French restaurant opening this fall at Thousand & One office tower, has named Heather Rivas as its general manager, according to Tampa Bay Business Journal. 4. ZooTampa is hosting special morning events with its African elephants on August 20 and August 27. One will be breakfast and a training session and another a painting session. Tickets are now available online. (WFLA)

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Center Ryan Jensen was injured during the second day of practice on Thursday, according to ESPN. Jensen appeared to injure his left knee and needed to be carted off the practice field. (ABC Action News)

  • Prices in the rental housing market are expected to continue rising in Tampa despite the housing market beginning to cool as those who cannot buy rent instead. The Fed expects to raise interest rate again in the fall. (Bay News 9)
  • Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Martin Gramatica has been named head coach of the National Indoor Soccer League expansion team, the Tampa Bay Strikers. (Tampa Patch)
  • SmileFaith in New Port Richey began turning veterans away after it ran out of money to sustain its program and is now reorganizing finances. Over 500 veterans were awaiting help from the program before it abruptly closed. Congressman Gus Bilirakis said if a veteran has emergency dental needs and does not have the money to cover the costs, they can contact his office at 727-232-2921. (ABC Action News)
  • Low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines has announced a new non-stop route between Tampa International Airport and Lexington, Kentucky, starting Friday, November 11. It is the first non-stop connection to Lexington in 17 years. (Subscription: Tampa Bay Times)
