Your Vote on the Vacation Rental Registration Referendum is Your Decision | Opinion

One of the most important responsibilities we have as citizens is to exercise our right to vote. We do so when we vote for those who represent us at varying levels of our government, from school boards to the highest positions in Washington, DC. Our responsibility and our right to vote is protected by the men and women who put on their uniforms and take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, sometimes at the cost of their lives. We should not take our responsibility lightly.

As each election cycle rolls around, lines are drawn in the sand by people on all sides of the issues. Lawn signs are placed throughout communities, advertising is purchased on various media outlets, and social media is ablaze with commentaries, insults and half-truths.

In the end, it is you, the voters, who will make the ultimate choice on each issue; whether it is who will occupy the seats to decide issues as mundane as how many times this month we will spray for mosquitos, or whether this year we will buy a new fire truck, or if our nation will put young men and women into harms- way because of foreign policy decisions. Needless to say, our responsibility as a voter is to be informed and educated because this important responsibility should never be taken lightly.

During the August 23, 2022, Primary Election, we will be asked to vote on referendum questions, and they are just as important as any other vote during this election. The proposed Vacation Rental Registration Ordinance has created much debate on the island. Both sides will spend a great deal of money to convince you that their position is the most reasoned one, as they each seek out your support of their competing positions.

Both sides are passionate about their beliefs. Lawn signs and other advertising supporting either a YES or NO vote are quickly cropping up around the community, and are showing up in both emails and mailboxes.
