Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The Brick Hotel is just one of three surviving brick buildings constructed during the late 19th century in Oceanside. The Aldrich family restored the historic building and is giving it new life as a 10-room boutique hotel with restaurant collaborations inside and out. Originally built in 1888, the building was a former hardware store, grocery store, fraternal lodge, community meeting spot, cafe, library, boarding house, chiropractor’s office and jeweler. The building’s brick and steel faΓ§ade brings back memories of its previous charm but its contemporary contactless room check-in and text message notifications for guests have brought the hotel fully into the 21st century. The hotel soft-opened in June and the restaurants are opening soon. (San Diego Business Journal)
  2. A small plane crashed on Saturday in Fallbrook, injuring the pilot and a passenger was killed. The single-engine, vintage military-style plane crashed less than a mile south of the county-owned Fallbrook Airpark, fire officials said. The plane crashed at about 1:52 pm at Altman Plants nursery on Olive Hill Road, said Capt. John Choi of the North County Fire Protection District. The body of a back-seat passenger was being recovered from inside the plane, the captain said. The pilot was taken to Palomar Hospital. The severity of the pilot’s injuries was not immediately disclosed. (San Diego Patch)
  3. Three Camp Pendleton Marine veterans have been awarded the Bronze Star Medals for their actions during the Vietnam War over 54 years ago. Late January, 1968, in Vietnam, marked the month-long Battle of Hue, one of the bloodiest of the Vietnam War. When Sergeant Major John Canley’s commanding officer was severely wounded, Canley led the 150-man Alpha Company of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. “He was on a different plane than all of us. He was totally fearless,” said John Ligato III. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
  4. The average price for a gallon of regular gas fell to $5.73 in San Diego Saturday, the lowest price it’s been since March 10. Saturday marks the 38th consecutive day of price drops at the pump, down 18 cents from just a week ago, according to AAA. The average price has decreased 64.8 cents during the streak, including 2.4 cents Friday, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. The streak of decreases follows a run of 19 increases in 20 days totaling 35.5 cents. (San Diego Patch)
  5. Three meteor showers will be visible this month in the skies over our area. The Perseid meteor shower is underway, giving Southern California skywatchers good reason to gaze at the early morning sky. The Delta Aquariid meteor shower runs through Aug. 2, peaking July 28-29, with about 20 meteors an hour. The Alpha Capricornids, which run through Aug. 15 and have a “plateau-like” peak on July 31, may be one of the more underrated meteor showers of the summer. (San Diego Patch)
