DENTON, TX – North Texas (32-14, 17-7) will kick off its postseason with a matchup against Charlotte (36-21, 14-12) at Lovelace Stadium Thursday, May 12 at 12 pm CT. North Texas earned a double-bye after securing the second seed while Charlotte started its postseason off on Wednesday, May 11 with wins over UAB and WKU.
HISTORY AGAINST OPPONENT
UNT holds a 3-7 all-time record against the 49ers after winning this year’s season series. The Mean Green traveled to Charlotte and won two out of three on the road back on March 25-27.
The Mean Green opened the series with a shutout win 1-0. The lone run came on an RBI groundout by Kailey Gamble to take the early lead. Freshman RHP Skylar Savage tossed her first collegiate no-hitter and struck out four batters as the Mean Green took the first game.
In game two, Charlotte jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first three innings before the Mean Green overcame their largest current since 2019. Kalei Christensen homered in the fourth inning to cut the deficit ton 6-3. In the sixth inning, UNT scored six runs started by a solo blast by Tayla Evans. North Texas won 9-6 to clinch the series.
The final game of the series didn’t go UNT’s way as the 49ers jumped out to a 6-0 lead. UNT fell 6-1 as the offense recorded one run on four hits.
UNT’s TOP PERFORMERS
Sophomore infielder Mikayla Smith had a career day in the second game of the weekend against Marshall. Smith recorded a career-high five RBI as she finished 2-for-4 on the day with one run, five RBI, and her third homer of the season. She concluded the regular season with 23 hits, 17 runs, and 21 RBI.
Redshirt sophomore Molly Rainey also had a good second game against Marshall as she filled the stat book. Rainey went 1-for-2 with a career-high three runs, one RBI, one stolen base, and two walks. Rainey is batting .321 on the season and has recorded 42 hits, 26 runs, and 23 RBI. The redshirt sophomore also leads the team in doubles (11) and sacrifice flys (6).
Junior LHP Ashley Peters won her second Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award this week after a dominating performance against the Thundering Herd. In 11.0 innings, Peters finished with a 0.64 ERA and 10 strikeouts while holding Marshall to one run. The junior left-handed pitcher went 1-0 on the weekend in three appearances. Peters (17-6) has struck out 141 batters this season and owns a 2.52 ERA for the season.
