Spendthrift Australia Dispersal Held by Magic Millions

Spendthrift Farm’s Australian disbanding will take its next major step with the sale of 95 broodmares, weanlings, and yearlings in a two-phase unreserved dispersal conducted by Magic Millions starting later this month.

The auction house April 7 announced 52 lots would be cataloged at the Magic Millions Online Sale April 19-20, comprising 21 broodmares, 22 weanlings, and nine yearlings.

Stage two will come at the Gold Coast National Sale from May 19-28 with 12 lots offered through the National Weanling Sale and 31 in the National Broodmare Sale.

Buyers will have the chance to purchase high-quality broodmares, including dual stakes winner Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince ), a 6-year-old half sister to triple group 1-winning mare-of-the-moment Duais (Shamus Award), and the 8-year-old Santa Monica (Per Incanto), winner of the Ellerslie’s Railway Stakes ( G1) in 2019.

The list also includes 5-year-old Melbourne city-winner Kuramae (Foxwedge ), a half sister to Forbidden Love (All Too Hard), and Joy At Last (More Than Ready ), an unraced 4-year-old half sister to Autumn Classic (G2) winner Castlereagh Kid (Snitzel ) from the superb Denise’s Joy (Seventh Hussar) family.

The dispersal comes four months after Spendthrift announced the closure of its six-year-old Australian operation—based out of its Victorian farm at Romsey—a decision that came four months after the death in the US of the breeding giant’s founder B. Wayne Hughes .

The announcement of the sale would also suggest the prospects of a buyer taking over Spendthrift Australia lock, stock, and barrel have not come to fruition.

“Over recent years the Spendthrift Australia team has assembled a wonderful portfolio of Thoroughbreds,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said. “There’s an incredible mix of the best bloodlines from Australia and abroad. It is a great honor and privilege to offer the 95 lots. This is a rare opportunity for buyers to bid with confidence on quality bloodstock at unreserved auction— whether it’s online this month or at the Gold Coast National Sale.”

No announcements have yet been made on the future of the farm’s four colonial stallions, Dirty Work (Written Tycoon ), Overshare (I Am Invincible ), Wear (Redoute’s Choice ), and Gold Standard (Sebring ), or of Spendthrift’s racing stock and the 600-acre property, the former Yallambee Stud.

Sebonack wins the Hotel Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse

Spendthrift’s racing stable currently includes the highly rated Team Hawkes-trained 2-year-old colt Sebonack (Capitalist), who won Caulfield’s Lamaros Hotel Chairman’s Stakes (G3) before a strong fourth, when beaten just over a length in the Blue Diamond Stakes (G1), and the Team McEvoy-trained Mac ‘N’ Cheese (Sebring), a dual listed-winning filly, who is currently third-favorite for the Australasian Oaks (G1).

Potential buyers eyeing stock to be offered in the online sale, which will be conducted through 28 hours of bidding, are asked to liaise with Spendthrift Australia in order to arrange on-farm inspections.

That draft’s yearlings comprise four colts and five fillies by OvershareSwear, and Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro ), the US stallion who stood one Australia season. The 22 weanlings are predominantly by two-season US shuttler Vino Rosso (Curlin ), as well as Swear and Gold Standard, while the 21 broodmares are in foal to Omaha Beach (War Front ), who also stood two seasons in Australia, plus either Dirty Work, Gold Standard, or Overshare.

Of the 31 mares going to the National Sale, all bar one are in foal, mostly to Dirty Work and Omaha Beach. The 12 weanlings are by Omaha Beach, Overshare, Vino Rosso, Deep Field (Northern Meteor ) and Super Seth (Dundel ).

Magic Millions has handled major dispersals in the past, including those for Patinack Farm, Teeley Assets, and Shadwell Stud.

“We’re honored to be entrusted with this. We’ve been working very closely with Spendthrift in all facets of their business in recent years,” Bowditch said. “They’ve invested heavily in Australia over the last decade and bought into some of the best pedigrees we have to offer, and it’s the fruits of this market will get out of supporting the sale.”

Magic Millions said the 52-lot online lineup could be viewed at Magic Millions Online from April 11. Anyone wishing to enter horses for the sale has until April 12 night to lodge their entry.

The company said catalogs for the MM National Weanling and Broodmare sales would be unveiled “in the coming days.”
